Pascal Bonitzer was born in Paris in 1946, and is a French screenwriter, director, actor and former film critic. After studying philosophy at Nanterre, he joined the magazine Les Cahiers du cinéma in 1969, where he distinguished himself through his reviews and theoretical writings. He began his film career in 1967 as an actor, before establishing himself as a screenwriter for major French New Wave directors, notably Jacques Rivette, André Téchiné and Raúl Ruiz. He has written for nearly 50 films and has directed several feature films, including Encore (Jean Vigo Prize in 1996), Rien sur Robert and Le Tableau volé, which premiered at Premiers Plans in 2024. In 2026, he released two new films, Maigret et le mort amoureux and Victor comme tout le monde.
