With its surprising title, Pierre Schoeller's first film talks soberly about misery. "The idea of Versailles came from when I discovered a dead man in the woods during the storms of the year 2000, just by the Chateau... I had to find the right image of this mother living in the streets with her child or of the man living in the woods. Poverty is a word which refers to very different situations... Someone sleeping on a bench or dressed in rags: this is ageless. This dimension took me towards a certain type of silent film where the pictures speak for themselves... For Guillaume Depardieu, and his broad range of feelings and expressions, there was this very strong encounter with the character and the film" (P. Schoeller).
