Kusturica regularly revisits his cultural, political and historical roots in Yugoslavia. With Underground he explores the theme of war and illustrates the murderous madness of decades of conflict. "The fact of having lived in a country and seeing that it no longer exists is a terrible loss for me" (Emir Kusturica). Hiding behind a backdrop of burlesque parties and deafening music is a tragedy whose starting point is three destructive wars. The chaos and excessiveness of the film are a reflection of this country which has been destroyed by conflicts, but which is inhabited by an unshakable vitality and madness. "A war film or, more exactly and more originally, a film with a war, a film which itself is a siege: war seen as a rock concert" (Libération).
