Once again, Raymond Depardon's ambition is to film the desert. But for this film, he chooses black and white, giving it a hallucinatory feel to it since ground and sky seem to be made of the same material. In voice-over he develops the story of Diego Brosset, a former officer in the French colonial army, entitled Sahara, un homme sans l'Occident (Sahara, a man without the West). Through the story of this free man unwilling to change his way of life, Depardon pays tribute to the Chadian nomads he knew since his report on the kidnapping of Françoise Claustre.
