Tricheurs looks at gambling addiction. Inspired by real life events experienced by Steve Baes, who ironically plays the director of the casino in the film, Schroeder tries to show "how gambling can give a cynical philosophical and completely detached view of the world" (Barbet Schroeder). After exploring drug addiction in More and sadomasochism in Maîtresse, Schroeder focuses on the folly of gambling and the way it contaminates a couple. "I didn't make the film thinking about gamblers, but I wanted to try to get audiences to feel the emotions of a gambler. It is impossible to get across the feeling of the sensation of drugs, the pleasure of masochism is incommunicable. So suspense is the solution. My story is true" (Barbet Schroeder).
