"Personally, I know no temptation more diabolical than the apparently innocent recommendation to ‘forget everything'. Forgiveness is never born out of the abolition of memory. (...) In a way, Reconstruction, The Oak (presented in Cannes in 1992) and Too Late constitute the trilogy of my lost hope. Reconstruction, in 1969, was nourished by my last hopes to see a more humanistic communism. With Too Late, I couldn't believe in it anymore (...). Amidst inhumane conditions, the miners continue to accomplish a job that everyone, including the miners themselves, knows has become useless. It is a situation that contributes to their being at the forefront of reactions. The pretext of a detective story that underlies the film draws in this way from history" (L. Pintillié).
