Tip Top is a total mix of genres. “With each scene change, there is a change of setting, of character, of tone, of everything. The viewer never knows which foot to stand on”, said Jean Douchet during a discussion with Serge Bozon. “If you look at things from an abstract point of view, one of the functions of the police is to spy on people, monitor them, etc. That is Sally's side. The other function of the police is to control, order, hit, bully, etc. That is Esther's side. So it is normal that these two women manifest at night-time what the do during the daytime (monitoring/hitting)”. Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain play this mis-matched pair of cops with an unintentional comic potential.
