Assifet Aoures
Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina

Trained in filmmaking in Prague, Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina worked as writer, cinematographer, and co-director on numerous short films, documentaries and informational films. Awarded best first film at Cannes in 1967, The Winds of the Aures is an epic story, western-like, that would impose the director of Chronicle of the Years of Fire as one of Algeria's most talented filmmakers. "Indeed, The Winds of the Aures marks the birth of Algerian cinema and defined what would be, for more than a decade, its basic orientation and theme. A work of flamboyant lyricism, through the formal treatment of landscape and movements of the crowd one detects glimmers of lyrical soviet films, but also and especially the exaltation of Algeria" (C.M. Cluny).
