Parallel to his studies in physics, Krzysztof Zanussi (1939) studied philosophy before graduating from the Lodz Film School. With The Structure of Crystal, he produced a film that was original if not daring for the Tor Group that nonetheless produced this filmed dialog."The Structure of Crystal offers no ready conclusions and gives no lessons on moral integrity or compromise. It opens the mind to the inevitable variety of choices. The alternative presented in the film through the characters of Marek and Jan is at once acceptable and condemnable. The only thing that is important, the film seems to say, is to understand the path you've taken and where it's going. It's a recurring theme in Zanussi's work. Without bending to one fashion or another, he has made a modest film that interprets a new personality, a new path, far from any stylistic pressure or fashionable affectation" (B. Michalek).
