Scriptwriter and director for television and cinema, Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) directed numerous documentaries before earning an international reputation with No End (1984) and The Decalogue (1988-1989). This belated recognition – at 47 years of age, Kieslowski had already directed eight feature-length films and more than twenty documentaries - should not cast a negative light on his earlier works, which all tried to uncover the reality of Polish society hidden behind a mask of propaganda. "In the 70s, making seen the unseen became one of the best defences against the collective schizophrenia taking over society, one of the prerequisites for trying to change or even modify in any efficient way what was a desperate situation. For Kieslowski, this point of view is demonstrated in his artistic work" (A. Werner).
