The Name of the Rose
Le Nom de la rose
Jean-Jacques Annaud
In the year 1327, Guillaume de Baskerville arrives in a Benedictine abbey somewhere in a mountain valley, where he is lead to investigate a monk's peculiar death. Full of characters with impossibly strange physiques, diabolical imagery, mythological fears and fundamental reflections on the era's political changes, The Name of the Rose is a medieval thriller over which floats a creative spirit" (G.L. Morvan). Adapted from a popular novel translated into 24 languages, the film's theological suspense is based on the fact that the murders seem connected to a text by Aristotle about the laugh. From this, Annaud created a major gothic film. "There is, in this intrigue, something of Borges who proclaimed that theology was ‘a branch of fantasy'" (J.L. Douin).
