Following the success of The Holy Grail, in 1975, Monty Python went on to make their next film, The Life of Brian. This film, which could be made thanks to Handmade Films, the production company belonging to their friend George Harrison, had it origins in a joke made to journalists. Following a question to Eric Idle on the name of their next film, he quipped that it was "Jesus Christ – Lust for Glory". Bit by bit, the team thought up a film which would mock the life of Jesus Christ in the same way as Holy Grail made fun of King Arthur. However, although they were non-believers, they decided that Jesus was "a good guy" and that there was nothing to ridicule in his teachings. So they made a satire making fun of the worshippers of an improbable Messiah. On its release in the UK, the film was banned by several councils, it was banned for eight years in Ireland, one year in Norway and sometimes given an X-certificate.
