In The Hourglass Sanatorium, Has pursues his foray into strangeness, begun in The Saragossa Manuscript, through an exploration of the maze of human memory. Named after the "clepsydra", the ancient clock that measured time according to a regular flow of water, this film was the product of five years of work, during which Has refused numerous propositions from Polish studios in order to devote himself to his task. About this poetic and thoughtful film, A. Mitjaville writes, "This work is visually stunning, a maze-like spectacle, an inner odyssey. Just like a hallucinogen, its screening has magical properties, watching it is fascinating, astounding. Like Rimbaud's drunken boat, the film carries each spectator along on a voyage across the seas of memory".
