"From the starting point of Andrew Law's Infernal Affairs Hong Kong trilogy, we took the idea of two informers. Whether I like it or not, I'm totally caught up in stories dealing with trust and treason" (M. Scorsese). To adapt the plot to his own particular urban American culture, Scorsese gave his gangster boss a very Melvillian name: Costello. "It was Paul Schrader (who wrote the script of Taxi Driver) who introduced me Melville's cinema when he took me to see Le Deuxième souffle, which is an outstanding film". Inspired by the French director, Martin Scorsese screened most of Melville's films to the cast and crew before filming The Departed.
