While Rupture takes place almost entirely in the character's office, Heureux anniversaire is a chance to roam the streets of the capital and to use the talents of Robert Blome, Laurence Lignières and Lucien Frégis, actors that would accompany Etaix in his film The Suitor. "Already in these first two films, Etaix establishes the recurrent elements of his filmmaking: working with the same set of actors, a love for the right rhythm and the precision of a film's effects, and a taste for manipulation" (R. Marx).
