As the title suggests, Kornél Mundruczó's 4th film is a mysterious variation on Mary Shelley's work. The fantastic aspect is nevertheless virtually invisible and it is up to the viewer to make the links with this multi-adapted classic. Frankenstein's monster here is a child who has suffered abandonment for so long that the lack of affection suddenly turns him into killer. Innocence flirts with evil in this being stripped of any intention, as if the moral boundary with acts had never been learned. “It is from the secret of this link, the fruits of a disavowed youthful passion, that the film gets its necessity. Monsters never come solely from our flesh, and their revolt is our burden” (Le Monde).
