Famous pop singer Becky del Paramo, returns to Madrid after many years absence. She finds her daughter Rebeca, who she abandoned to pursue her career. Rebecca has married Manuel, one of her mother's former lovers who works as a TV presenter. One night, Manuel is murdered….

The original title can be translated as Distant Heels, those of the absent mother making this film a heartrending melodrama on filiation and which represents an important transition in Almodóvar's work. The kitsch is definitively abandoned for discreet flamboyance. After visiting the set, Frédéric Strauss wrote “Tacones lejanos has many surprises lying in wait for us, but the film Almodóvar thought about the most while making this film was John M. Stahl's Leave Her to Heaven, and you can bet that with this new feature Almodóvar will give melodrama back its sumptuous golden letters”. Marisa Paredes plays the role of an iconic diva in the film, then soon, in the director's whole work.
