Walerian Borowczyk (1923) began his career in as an artist and lithograph. He graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1951, and was soon recognised as one of the world's greatest animators for the nightmarish surrealism of his films. He moved to Paris and collaborated with Chris Marker on The Astronauts. In the 1970s, Borowczyk filmed his first non-animated films, Goto, Island of Love and Blanche. Between shooting Immoral Tales and The Beast, he returned to Poland to film Story of a Sin. "In its excessiveness, its blend of morality and libertinage, Story of a Sin resembles Sade's Justine, with passionate love in the place of the misfortune of virtue. References abound to explain this extravagant, cruel and pathetic film, where the most violent passions meet great depths of absurdity.
