A worthy heir to Ozu, Hirokazu Kore-eda confirms with each film he makes his taste for the theme of childhood. He explores the moment when a man feels to have become a father since he himself became one. It is this question which gave him the idea for Soshite chichi ni naru (Like Father, Like Son). Although the subject is the same as La Vie est un long fleuve tranquille (Life is a Long Quiet River), his extremely subtle treatment was a surprise to many, including Serge Kaganski in Les Inrocks: “Kore-eda approaches this constellation of serious social questions with an infinite amount of tact, delicacy, subtlety, as if he managed to build a matchstick cathedral out of big logs”.
