While taking classes at the Lodz Film School, Wojciech Marczewski (1944) was involved in the graphic arts, exhibited his work, and wrote in the school newspaper. After a state of war was declared in December 1981, he chose silence and became a professor at a film school in Copenhagen. In 1990, he returned to Polish theatre screens with Escape From the 'Liberty' Cinema. Through the seemingly autobiographical portrait of a child, Marczewski shows in Shivers how the regime won over the spirit of youth, the indoctrination methods as well as the means used to subjugate willpower and break people down. "I wanted to make a film that wasn't simply political. My basic idea was to make a film about childhood – mine as well as my generation's – with all the baggage of experiences lived during this period" (W. Marczewski).
