This film noir takes place in a charming little residential town in an innocent and vulnerable American family, making the suspense even more efficient. The "master of suspense" manages to build up the tension from a totally ordinary everyday situation. With Charlie Oakes and his disturbing appearance, the film reflects Hitchcock's fascination with dark and threatening characters (particularly reminiscent of Norman Bates in Psycho).Shadow of a Doubt was Hitchcock's favourite film, and he said of it that "it brings murder and violence back into the home, where it belongs".
