A young woman is found dead of cold. Was it a natural death? It is a question for a policeman or a sociologist. What could you know of her and how did those who crossed her path react? This is the subject of the film about Mona, telling the last two months of her vagrancy.

A policeman had told Agnès Varda about finding a young man who had died of cold under an apple tree. Obsessed with this tragic story and wanting to film the landscapes of the Hérault and the Gard ( the “harsh south” as she called it), Varda went investigate vagrants and the destitute. It is not by chance that the film is dedicated to Nathalie Sarraute, insofar as is construction takes from the nouveau roman a refusal of psychology in favour of a brutal neutrality, a juxtaposition of interviews, of documents and reconstitutions. Agnès Varda wanted every spectator to be a witness to the journey of her character, Mona, and make their own opinion. Sans toit, ni loi (Vagabond) won the Lion d'Or in Venice in 1985, the César for Best Actress for Sandrine Bonnaire and garnered great audience and critical success.
