Much more than a film on emigration and its problems, which was Visconti's initial project, the film takes the form of a 5 act tragedy through the exploration of the individual destinies of 5 brothers. Considered as Visconti's return to neo-realism, attacked by politicians and targeted by the censors, the film explores the theme of a family destroying itself through fratricide, as in La caduta degli dei (The Damned) or La terra trema (The Earth Will Tremble). Rocco launched many new stars, including Alain Delon, who was starting out in his career.
