Inspired by Roald Dahl's short story Lamb to the Slaughter, this dark comedy was born as a reaction to the architecture of the Concepción neighbourhood of Madrid. “I was deeply marked by the neighbourhood”, stated Almodóvar. “The interiors are just as ugly as the exteriors …” The film's energy is carried from beginning to end by his muse, Carmen Maura, who is evocative of neo-realist figures such as Silvana Mangano or Anna Magnani. However, behind the satire and reference to salacious subjects (paedophilia, prostitution, drugs) there hides a beating heart and the eccentric characters are inspired by memories relating to Almodóvar's family. It is, in fact, the first film where he gives a small role to his mother.
