A scriptwriter and director, Agnieszka Holland (1948) studied at the FAMU in Prague under Milos Forman and Ivan Passer. In 1971, she returned to Poland where she worked as assistant to Zanussi and Wajda until she began as a her own career as a director with Provincial Actors, which won the FIPRESCI Award in Cannes in 1980. "A veritable protest against the inability to act, manipulation and moral paralysis, this first film depicts with precision, intelligence and subtlety the life of a provincial theatre, where there reigns an atmosphere of mediocrity due to disappointed hopes and disillusionment of its actors" (B. Michalek). "I don't know if I succeeded, but I wanted to show not the mechanics of manipulation but rather human destiny, with all of its complications and perturbations. I wanted to place the accent on the existential and not social side of things" (A. Holland).
