After making his episode of Pane, amore e ... (Bread, Love, and...), Dino Risi presented, in the same year, Poveri ma belli (The Girl in the Bikini) which would be his first big success, enabling him to make two follow-ups, Belle ma povere (Pretty but Poor) in 1957 and Poveri milionari (Poor Millionaires) in 1958. This trilogy is also famous for have consecrated "pink neo-realism", a current which combined some aspects of neo-realism with farce, giving rise to a series of comic adventures. Light and entertaining this is an unpretentious comedy which presents sentimental little scenes expressing the changes brought by the economic boom: "the characters did not want to be seen through post-War misery. Society was changing, the social fabric was too. In its own way Povere ma belli represents a transition from one life to another" (Fernaldo Di Giammatteo).
