Produced with a considerable budget, Pharaoh nevertheless aspires to be more than simply a poor copy of a Western super-production. Kawalerowicz insists, "I wasn't trying to make a blockbuster, with epic battles and thousands of extras. I read Prus' novel with the eyes of a contemporary man, and it contained living, contemporary problems." By valorising youthful romanticism, he found himself sharing the ideal of the Polish School: romantic effort in defeat. "Pharaoh is an epic film that incorporates an intellectual and aesthetic meditation on power, the function of the State, the sacrifices it demands and the ideology it represents" (B. Michalek).
