For a year and a half, Pedro Almodóvar made his film at the weekend. The team and the budget were both collective. His friends and acquaintances, having been amused by his amateur short films, accepted to lend him a hand. With hindsight, Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón takes on the appearance of a manifesto for the Movida. Nothing is taboo, and this hedonistic journey across underground Madrid reveals a filmmaker who is not afraid of bad taste or of kitsch, and who dares to use collage and pastiche. Made during the so-called transition, between the death of Franco and the installation of democracy, the film mocks those who are nostalgic for fascism. Almodóvar puts into the mouth of the policeman, disillusioned by so much decadence, the words “that's what Spain has become”. A Spain free to listen to the impulses of a new enfant terrible.
