Jerzy Kawalerowicz (1922) graduated from the cinema programme at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. Starting off as assistant director, he finally co-directed La Commune, a commissioned film, according to the codes of social realism. He belonged, with Munk and Wajda, to the 1950s generation, marked by destalinisation and the cultural identity crisis. "I don't have an artistic credo. I neither want to create nor impose limits on myself. The films that I make are products of the present, of my current existence, my artistic experiences and my passions." Night Train imposes, in terms of space, the definition of its characters, and its dramatic events, "severe constraints that require a virtuosity from the filmmaker comparable to that necessary to compose a concerto for the left hand. This sketchy, fragile story is a breathtaking cinematographic spectacle" (B. Michalek).
