"In collaboration with Tadeusz Konwicki, Kawalerovicz wrote a script in which no reference is made to time, place or to the events in such a way as to give the film a universal dimension" (T. Sobolewski). Kawalerovicz affirms that he didn't want to make antireligious propaganda, but rather a work of art that would "open a debate between the materialist and idealist positions, to react against lies, conformism and dogmas of all kinds" (K. Kawalerovicz). "The tension and psychological pain are served by the austere and terrifying settings (the convent and the inn). Their dismal simplicity of form only exacerbates the madness and demons. One could almost say that it is a classical form used to express a gothic subject matter, and that this gives the film a complex aesthetic maturity" (B. Michaleck).
