More than in his two previous films, in Mon Oncle (My Uncle) Jacques Tati relates the passing from the world of dreams and leisurely activity to the geometry and functionality of the modern world. This is expressed using a border, the border between old Saint-Maur and the new town built on its outskirts. With humour and melancholy, Mon oncle depicts the changes in French society through its unique staging and perfectly timed comedy. Boris Vian was quite right when he said that “Tati is more than a French Chaplin, he is an original creator (…). Tati is Tati. He is like no-one else and it would be a hard job to be like him”.
