"I was extremely struck by the atmosphere of Los Angeles, which is a fascinating city: the decor, the streets, people's problems. I had the impression I had never seen in an American film, or ever seen Los Angeles on screen as it appeared to me in reality. I wanted to show it to my American friends" (Jacques Demy). The wrong foots the director's usual aesthetic and his dreamlike world. The sets are discreet, the camera movements simple and straightforward. Jacques Demy made his intention clear "to be logical with the city, to respect its own logic". Despite this movement towards soberness, it is once again a question of time and encounters, like in his previous films.
