In 1983, Mauvaise conduite takes stock of the Cuban revolution's first 25 years. 28 Cuban exiles, spread around the world, victims of the repression of homosexuals, of intellectuals or simply unsubordinated people, talk about the dark side of the regime where arrests and deportation were current events.

Nestor Almendros is of Spanish origin, and after having lived in Cuba for around 20 years, he moved to France, disappointed with Castro's revolution. In 1996, he was director of photography for Eric Rohmer's La Collectionneuse. The two men went on to work together on many other occasions. He worked with François Truffaut several times, and also Barbet Schroeder for More, Général Idi Amin Dada, Koko, le gorille qui parle, and Maîtresse. In Mauvaise conduite he uses archive images and interviews to explore those rejected by Castro's system. "Why did we prefer to interview exiles? Firstly, there are insurmountable difficulties in getting a permit to film in Cuba, particularly for this type of investigation. Even in the best possible situation we would have had no freedom of action. The people filmed wouldn't have been able to express themselves openly for fear of reprisals".
