For the first time, Almodóvar leaves his caustic humour to one side in favour of a more serious tone. The story revolves around bullfighting and all the ambiguity of this “national tradition”. Desire, seduction and death all cross paths in this film, leading up to the final horizon: a sexual act which turns into a double murder during a total eclipse. Two stars meets, knocking out the other characters. These obsessional creatures are only one aspect of this labyrinthine story where Almodóvar's art takes on a difficult ambition for the first time: mixing physical sensuality with a more abstract reflection on cinema.
