After studying at the Mine Academy, followed by studies in architecture and law, Andrzej Munk (1921-1963) enrolled at the Lodz Film School. From 1951 to 1955, he directed several short films. From topical subjects, his projects evolved little by little into fully elaborated documentaries. This evolution naturally lead Munk to direct his first feature-length film in 1956, Man on the Tracks. "This film contributed to the calling into question of socialist realism by defying it in its most sensitive locations, those of work and production. Moreover, the technique consisting of comparing different versions of the same event reflects the need to seek the truth and pluralism, which made dogmatic viewers uncomfortable. Thanks to a constantly moving camera that offers different views on the characters, objects, landscapes and interiors, the director does not dominate the story, leaving it in the hands of the spectator" (E. Nurczynska).
