A great popular success, Man of Marble was the first Polish film to openly denounce the authoritative and bureaucratic practices of the 1950s and the falsification of official History. Wajda took advantage of periods of relative liberty to bear witness to the struggles of his generation. He wanted the film to be a moment of discovery for the young, and of rediscovery for those who could still remember. The character of the documentary filmmaker acts as a sort of bridge between the two generations. "Several years before the events of Gdansk, Wajda tells us the story of a worker, the model worker from socialist propaganda, with the grandeur of Welles telling the story of Kane" (S. Daney).
