Man of Iron is an investigation that leads us to Agnieska, who plays the young director in Man of Marble, in this film the militant and wife of Tomczyck. It was following the Lenin dockyard strikes in Gdansk that the Solidarnosc movement was born. During the strike, Wajda went to Gdansk to see the filming of a documentary about the negotiations, Robotnicy '80. Back in Warsaw, Wajda began working with the idea this time to follow the son of Birkut, the hero in Man of Marble. "With the force that urgently-made films have, Man of Iron remains a one of a kind film about the events in 1980. Released in Poland in July 1981, it enjoyed en immense popular success... before the martial law of December 13, 1981 forbid its being shown" (B. Michaleck).
