Lumière is a film for women by a woman. There are many men, but seen from the outside, like attractive, troublesome or unpredictable companions. Bruno Ganz plays one of them. "The unity of the film comes from the femininity of the world it evokes and from the point of view of Jeanne Moreau who goes from one to another of her heroines with the same friendship, the same warm complicity" (Jean De Baroncelli). Jeanne Moreau said of this, her first, film, "it is above all a film about life, a story of feelings and of people. I simply chose to show people whose problems I know about because they are the same as mine. It's fine being an actress, but everyone has their own way of looking at their existence. The strong theme of film, i.e. the desire, is to finish the pathway of life harmoniously and painlessly".
