After two sophisticated labyrinthine films, Almodóvar left the film noir and the thriller to one side in favour of a zany comedy. It was a way for him to get back to the folly and extravagance of his first films in the Movida period while at the same time updating it. A plane going round in circles, like a metaphor for contemporary Spain. A single space totally invented by his loyal art director Antxón Gómez. “The film reconnects with the unsophisticated humour of the music hall, the pure present of a small theatre with a few spaces (the passenger area, the mini-galley and the cockpit).
