By chance it was again thanks to a musician that this parody of the New Testament could be produced. Fearing a controversy, the producers at EMI pulled out and it was George Harrison, a fan of the group, who saved the film. When it was released in the UK, an association christened the Nationwide Festival of Light tried to stop the film from getting an exhibition certificate. At the same time the film was banned in Norway, Ireland and Italy before these countries finally allowed it. In the United States, representatives of the Catholic and Protestant churches considered it a sin even to go and see the film … which had great success with audiences!
