Les Plages d'Agnès
Agnès Varda

Returning to the beaches which marked her life, Varda invents a form of auto-documentary. Agnès shares her beginnings as a theatre photographer, then a novice filmmaker in the 1950s, her life with Jacques Demy, her commitment to feminism, her journey to Cuba, China, the USA, her career as an independent producer, her family life and her love of beaches.

“It is a curious idea to film a self-portrait when you're nearly 80. This idea sprang up in my mind one day, on a beach in Noirmoutier, when I realised that beaches had marked my life”. Agnès Varda has made a kaleidoscopic film. This time it is not a question of going out to meet others to talk about yourself, but on the contrary to talk about yourself to talk of what you love. This stream of consciousness collage took a long time, the shoot was improvised over long periods, the commentary changed constantly. “Even at the moment when you take stock, the present remains a party, a cabinet of curiosities” (Louis Guichard, Télérama).
