Léonce is a well-off middle-aged man. During a dinner with his son and his girlfriend he is disturbed by an unabashed stranger, who has come "to piss him off" for no apparent reason. After acerbic verbal jousts the intruder begins questioning Léonce about his ambiguous relationship with his maid Nacifa.

With a stunning cast (Michel Bouquet and Philippe Noiret make up an irresistible duo as the "right-wing old fart" and the "left-wing old fart" in these untypecast roles that Blier loves so much), the film produces a series of darkly humorous dialogues and lifts a number of taboos. However the film was a failure for critics and audiences alike. As is often the case in Blier's films the question of women plays a central role. "All men are lost. Without women we would be howling in the woods like wolves", says the love-smitten Old Man. With an impeccable soundtrack and an ostensibly declaimed performance, the film cleverly reaches back to its theatrical past.
