For Agnès Varda, the idea of “happiness” is linked to nature. The first image which came into her mind for her film was that of a pastoral, with, at its heart, a family picnicking in the countryside. The family in question is played by a real family, the family of actor Jean-Claude Drouot. Famous throughout France for his role as Thierry la Fronde on television, he performs here alongside his wife, Claire, and their two children. When it was released, the film caused a genuine scandal for the way in which its theme, adultery, was treated without any moral judgement. Le Bonheur (Happiness) was even banned for the under-18s.
