François Truffaut "first wrote down a series of little stories, some going back to the time when he was working on The Kids and The 400 Blows, others autobiographical, like the one about his first kiss at summer camp back in August 1949, still others inspired by news events, and some simply invented. (...) His intention wasn't to write a true screenplay, as he wanted to be able to improvise with the children who would be acting in the film. He wrote the dialogue as he went along, for situations already in place, expressing some of his thoughts on childhood." (A. de Baecque and S. Toubiana) "For Small Change, I wanted to set up with my film crew for two full months in a provincial city and play with the unity of time and place, having a school completely at my disposal and the whole city as a backdrop. (...) What the children in the film all have in common is their hunger for autonomy and the implicit need of love they're so unaware of." (F. Truffaut)
