Luis returns to Castile to place his mother's remains in the family vault. His father was pro-Republican during the Civil War so the "pro-Franco" members of the family in a small village took him in. With them and his dear cousin Angélique, he relives that period of his life and rediscovers the little Luis that he was.

Already with The Delinquents, his first film shot in 1959, Carlos Saura suffered censorship under the Francoist regime. During the 1970's he made consecutively The Garden of Delights (1970), Anna and the Wolves (1973), Cousin Angelica (1973) and Raise Ravens (1976). These four films, showing a modern society ossified by a reactionary government opposed to progress, assailed the church, the army and the family, the three pillars of the regime, through the use of metaphor and symbolism.
