Almodóvar very freely adapted Thierry Jonquet's novel Mygale (Tarantula) and explicitly revisits another film, Les Yeux sans visages (Eyes Without a Face) by Georges Franju. This thriller succeeds in perfectly blending themes close to Almodóvar's heart (abuse of power, changing sex, seclusion, etc.) and a variation on Frankenstein. Almodóvar makes Elena Anaya the most combative woman on film and meets up again with Antonio Banderas, to whom, as always, he gives the role of an anxious, obsessed man. In an interview, Banderas talked of reworking with Almodóvar 22 years after ¡Átame! (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down!): “Finding him again, I knew that he had not given up on anything. With an iron fist, he still shakes everyone around him up. Because he is not in a fixed system, he is always searching”.
