La Petite voleuse
Claude Miller

Janine Castang is a modest young lady who likes movies and boys. She lives with her uncle and aunt and spends her time lying and stealing. Her guardians, fed up with her, place her as maid in a local well-to-do family. She hangs around two men: Michel, married, who tries to cultivate; and Raoul, a young roofer who is a bad influence.

Claude Miller was production manager on a string of François Truffaut's films from 1968-1975 before directing his feature film, The Best Way to walk, in 1975. "Today, a few of us have lost their best production manager, but French cinema has gained a first-class director" (F. Truffaut) In 1988, he directs The Little Thief, based on an unpublished screenplay by François Truffaut who considered it to be a female The 400 Blows. In a letter to Helen Scott in 1965, François Truffaut wrote: "I had quite a day today. I went to see my first girlfriend, the first woman I lived with, in 1948. She is not as attractive, but then neither am I. She has done time, had three children, worked the streets, and so on. She is living in Marseille. I'll go see her in October and record an interview with her to use in writing the screenplay for The Little Thief."
