Frustrated with the production difficulties on Fahrenheit 451, François Truffaut wrote the screenplay and shot this intimate film in a very short period of time. "The Soft Skin started out as a somewhat idyllic idea that is woven throughout the film. We were talking about relationships between men and women and adultery, and we wanted to make a film where the wife, the husband and the lover were all on equal standing." (J-L. Richard) "Once again, it's the most banal subject in the world. Him, Her, and the Other. He's 44. She's 38. The Other's 22. And then? The details. And all those details, that's The Soft Skin. (...) It's the least sentimental of my films, and the most severe. It's like this sort of autopsy, or drought, and I suffered during the filming of it because it became difficult for me to be warmhearted or to bring any warmth to the film." (F. Truffaut)
