Turned down by Les Artists Associés, Day for Night was financed in part by Warner Bros, and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1973. It was a box-office success in France and abroad. "Shooting a film is a "world unto itself": the various private lives that get intertwined with the story of the film, the flimsy love affairs that cause havoc on the set, all of that amuses the director. (...) Truffaut knows the flaws and pettiness of that world. He knows that shooting a film is about compromise and learning to adapt. But his film is also about the love of making movies in spite of everything." (Antoine de Baecque) "Each time I was on a shoot, I'd toss around the idea of making a film about the making of a film for the simple reason that the most astoundingly comical, curious, and interesting situations occur on the set, which the public never gets a glimpse of because they all simply take place off camera and behind the scenes." (F. Truffaut)
