Based on a detective novel by William Irish, François Truffaut emphasizes the sentimental framework of the story, but rejects the author's surprise ending. Paying homage to Hitchcock, he hires Bernard Hermann, his brilliant composer."The tendency of the French is to take and use this American material while refusing to put in all the crazies and the bad guys. (...) The tendency of Europeans is to round out the edges rather than emphasize the drama, to constantly tone it down. The effects? That is the subject. (...) If you look at the images of The Bride, you see a woman going from one place to another, meeting men and killing them. If you listen to the soundtrack, you hear conversations about love and how men look at women. It's never a question of killing." (F. Truffaut)
